24HR Summer Solstice

Nothing defines the start of Summer for Ontario mountain bikers better than Chico Racing’s 24HR Summer Solstice race. It’s a favourite among the cycling community and is one of the largest mountain bike events in the country. It brings together racers, vendors, manufactures and distributors for 24 hours of racing and fun.

This year was a first for a few of the Team Progressive riders and despite our last minute decision to enter the race, we managed to assemble 7 riders for the 10-Person category. With some of the team unavailable for the weekend, we recruited 3 non-Maverix riders to mix it and have some fun: Brendan Mackillop, Malcom Barton and Ty Orschel.

Kelsey kicked us off with the opening lap, which was all a part of his master plan for the day, as he set out to pull off what we referred to as the Summer Solstice trifecta: 1) Fastest First Lap, 2) Fastest Lap Overall, 3) Fastest Overall Team. He made good on his first goal, crossing the finish line first on the opening lap, following which we all got to work! Each rider did 4 to 5 laps each with Kelsey eventually achieving his second goal in the wee hours of the morning – Fastest Overall Lap! The team managed to uphold Kelsey’s opening lead and finished up in the top spot overall, completing 30 Laps!

We had a blast ripping up the Albion course and hanging out in the tent area as we readied for our next laps. As always, Simon was the one-man support crew, cleaning and prepping bikes between laps and ensuring snacks and fuel was abundant! Elicia, from Progressive Nutritional, was also out to cheer on the team and showcase some of their awesome product in the exhibit area. Their support has been amazing this season!

Another great event by Chico Racing and amazing hospitality from Albion Hills crew! We’ll be putting this one on our 2016 calendar!
