Woodnewton once again played host to the Ontario Cup (O-Cup) season opener, and the damp Spring weather didn’t keep the crowd away for the 2016 provincial series kick-off.
The trails were dry and dusty heading into the race weekend so the rain actually improved the conditions and made for an even faster race course on Sunday! Most of the team came out on Saturday to preview the course, help set up the team expo area and volunteer with the Learn-to-Ride Clinics.
Team Progressive had an amazing start to the O-Cup season with 6 riders gracing the podium! Cadet Mike Solic kicked it off with a second place finish in the early morning waves, just missing the top of the podium by seconds. U23 rider Liam Mulcahy raced his first O-Cup race in the Senior Elite category and proved he was ready to duke it out with the big boys, with an impressive second place finish! Junior Experts Malcolm Barton and Noah Simms rounded out the podium in their category with well-earned second and third place finishes. Master Expert Mike Davidson also started his season strong with a first place finish in his field! Friend and huge Maverix Racing supporter Greg Jess donned our team kit as he took first place in his Master Sport field. Greg also won the Fastest Lap in his start wave; we’re sensing a team affiliation change on his race license!
In addition to the podium results, the team had an amazing day of racing with only one mechanical and a few personal bests, e.g.: like Kyle Money with an impressive 6th place in his Expert field! This was also our first official event with most of the 2016 team members together and the atmosphere was great and the support between team members was world-class.
Also first-rate, was the event itself. Sean and his Superfly Racing team gave us yet another great weekend of racing.
Finally, a big thanks to all of our sponsors and supporters for keeping us moving forward!
